Private claims to have published the first full colour hardcore magazine, it must be remembered that the early editions of Private Magazine contained only softcore pictures and the first Private magazine did not feature hardcore until 1968. There were many small companies producing hardcore magazines by 1968 in Denmark and Color Climax started in August 1968. 

Founded by Berth Milton; Private was joined by sister magazine Pirate at the end of the 1970s. Pirate contained more graphic images of fisting, pissing, and in one edition a scat sequence, Pirate ran in this harder hardcore form for only a couple of years producing only a handful of issues. By 1991 Private Media had been formed by Berth Milton JR who took over the operation from his drunken and money-troubled father and moved from Sweden to Spain; Pirate magazine was reborn but without any pissing and fisting content, and continues to be a fetish version of Private Magazine.

As video became a major factor in pornography production, Private produced Private Sex and Private Triple X magazines which featured pornstars from recent Private film productions. Private Special-themed magazines became popular towards the end of the 1990s, titles include "Gladiators", "Porn Wars", "Uranus Experiment" and many others.
